Las Vegas Sign

The Las Vegas sign is one of the iconic images on the Las Vegas Strip. As visitors drive down the Strip, they are greeted by the famous landmark and the words, "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada." Those driving off the main Strip will see the other side: "Drive Carefully Come Back Soon."

The Las Vegas sign has welcomed visitors to the city since its 1959 construction, but it has been moved several times to accommodate other construction projects. Today the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign is just south of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and just west of McCarran International Airport. There is also a replica of the Las Vegas Sign on Boulder Highway (where it crosses Harmon). Neither sign marks any sort of city limit; technically, the Vegas Sign is located outside the Las Vegas city limits.

The Las Vegas Sign was designed by Betty Willis and created by the Western Neon Company. The neon and flashing lights are reminiscent of the 1950's style. The Las Vegas sign's has never been copyrighted or trademarked, which is why it is used on many Las Vegas souvenirs and images. It is even featured on some Nevada license plates. The Las Vegas sign has come to represent the city and it introduces the atmosphere that makes Las Vegas such a great city.
